You would like the difference between the seat height and the surface height to be approximately 11 inches, give or take an inch or two either way.

There are other factors to take into consideration also. Do you want the wooden stools to have swivel seats or should they be stationary? They can be convenient for adults, but young children tend to want to play on them and that could be dangerous. What about cushions? Some find that a stool is more cozy in its natural state while some like the softness of a cushion, very if they will be seated for any length of time.
